Under the background of the match of Hungary’s “opening to the East” policy and China’s “One Belt, One Road” strategy, the economic relation between China and Hungary has reached a record high in recent years. In order to study the economic relationship between China and Hungary, this research has explored the political, economic and cultural institutional environments as well as the historic root between China and Hungary, and outlined the theoretical background regarding the comparative advantage theories, the global value chain paradigm and the eclectic paradigm. Centered on the research questions, this research has attempted to analyze different economic activities between these two countries, including the trade in goods and service, investment, people-to-people and information exchange. In terms of research method, both qualitative and quantitative methods have been adopted in this research. To study the trade relationship, this article has not only used traditional trade data, but it has also supplemented the trade analysis with new TiVA (Trade in Value Added) data. Two important indicators (RCA and RID) have been used to evaluate the comparative advantage and import dependence of the goods trade. Besides, both traditional FDI data and the new FDI data with the ultimate source countries have been used to analyze the investment activities between these two countries. On the basis of the analyses, main research findings are as follows. First, the goods trade structure of China and Hungary are very similar, both relying heavily on exporting machinery and transport equipment. Second, the trade in service between China and Hungary is quite inadequate and transportation service plays a major role for both export and import. Third, China and Hungary both have revealed comparative advantage in exporting mechanical and transport equipment to each other, but in different specific commodities of mechanical and transport equipment. Fourth, China has import dependence on Hungary’s exports of food and beverages, manufactured goods, and mechanical and transport equipment, while Hungary has import dependence on China’s exports of manufactured goods and mechanical and transport equipment. Fifth, the share of intermediate goods export was much higher than that of final goods export, and the surge of gross goods export was actually attributed to the substantial growth of the gross exports of intermediate goods. Sixth, Hungary has become the most important destination for China to invest in among all CEE countries and China’s FDI flow into and stock in Hungary mainly focused on some industries like communication equipment, chemicals, IT service and so forth, which are mainly carried out some big TNCs (like Huawei); and China as an ultimate investor invested much more to Hungary than as an immediate investor. Finally, the flows of labor, information and technology are very rare between China and Hungary, but most recently both countries are making greater efforts to strengthening their relation through a series programs and events. Accordingly, there are four chief strategic suggestions from the perspective of China, including diversifying the trade structure of goods, promoting the service trade especially tourism and movie industries, investing more in pharmaceuticals, automobile and new energy industries, and improving the flows of talented labor, information and technology.
