Absztrakt (kivonat)

The purpose of this study is to assess the European value-added trade in service from a gravity model perspective. With the growing importance of services in the EU, it is paramount to formulate policies and carried out activities that would promote service trade. There are numerous pieces of literature on services; however, this study applies a microscopic view on the neglected domestic value-added content of services in the gross exports of the twenty-eight (28) member states of the EU to the members of the organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) from the year 2000-2011. The study is first of its kind to apply the gravity model on the OECD’s Trade in Value-Added (TiVA) database. The Pseudo Poisson Maximum Likelihood estimator was used over Ordinary Least Squares to analyze EU trade with OECD because of the problem of heteroscedasticity and zero trade flows. The study revealed that GDP and service value-added share a statistically significant and positive relationship. The distance between trade partners continues to hamper trade, but its effect on valued-added trade is insignificant. Oddly, foreign direct investment and human development index are statistically insignificant, though positively correlated to value-added trade in services. However, value-added trade shared a strong relationship with internet users and regional trade agreements. This implies that value-added is driven by infrastructure and would further improve if countries engage in regional trade agreements. The only limitation of the study is the period of data. To fully understand determine and assess the factors of value-added trade flows especially services, statistical bodies, and trade agents must collaborate in providing a comprehensive data that would expand the TiVA database beyond 2011.
