Abstract With the adjustment of the world economic structure and the continuous deepening of economic globalization, the service industry has achieved rapid development, which has led to the prosperity and development of service trade. The competitive strength of ser-vice trade has become an important indicator to measure the international competitiveness of a country. Therefore, improving the competitiveness of service trade and further stimulating the development of the overall economy is an objective requirement for eco-nomic restructuring. The continuous development of China’s trade in services has con-tinuously expanded the scale of trade, but China’s service trade competitiveness is rela-tively weak. India, as a developing country with many similarities to China, has achieved some outstanding achievements in the development of service trade. This article systematically discusses the relevant literature review and theoretical basis for service trade competitiveness. By using the service trade data of 2005-2016 from UNCTAD database, the development status and competitiveness of China’s and India’s trade in services can be compared from the two perspectives of service trade, overall ser-vice trade performance(including total volume, annual percentage change and balance of imports and exports), and service trade import and export industrial structures. On the basis of the comparative analysis on the current situation of China’s and India’s trade in services, the comparative advantages and disadvantages of China’s and India’s trade ser-vices can be identified. A comparative analysis of the competitiveness of service trade in China and India was conducted by using Market Share (MS), Trade Competitive Power Index (TC), and Revealed Comparative Advantage Index (RCA). The results show that China’s service trade exceeds India in terms of scale of development. However, China’s service trade is in a trade deficit, while India’s trade in services is in a trade surplus. Moreover, India has shown a certain lead in the optimization and upgrading of the service trade structure, and has certain competitive advantages in some emerging industries. Following the above analysis, the factors affecting the competitiveness of China’s and India’s trade in services are analyzed and compared based on the six aspects in Porter’s Diamond Model, which jointly determine the international competitiveness of a country’s industries. This provides lessons and experience for the development of service industries and service trade in developing countries.
