Abstract This thesis examines the role of humanitarian military intervention in resolving conflicts, particularly in the two cases of Kosovo and Libya. These two specific cases were chosen due to the reason that both of them became the issue of debates from different perspectives among scholars. The debate whether humanitarian interventions are purely based on national interests of intervening states or are launched mainly for solving conflicts, triggered the first research question of this particular work: Does the self-interests of the United Nations Security Council lead to the authorization of humanitarian intervention or are they truly dedicated towards conflict resolutions? The second research question is connected with the issue of effectiveness, markedly, whether humanitarian interventions are effective in resolving conflicts based on the analysis of the final outcomes. Therefore, it is formulated as: Does the humanitarian intervention promote short and long-term humanitarian benefits? These two questions will be answered by looking at each scenario. Additionally, it seems that while humanitarian intervention might play a crucial role in conflict resolution and might eliminate human rights violations, still, there is a possibility of creating even more chaos by launching it. In this regard, the research tests the following hypothesis: humanitarian intervention, mainly driven by the self-interests of the states, provokes some success at some point but does not guarantee the establishment of long-lasting peace, particularly, leads to the dissolution of existing state institutions and structures, resulting even larger chaos than before. Both cases are analyzed with respect to the number of people who were saved, including both: civilians and militaries as a measurement for short-term effectiveness. Regarding the long-term effectiveness, the general situation in the aftermaths of the crisis is taken into consideration. More precisely, generally, it includes political and economic situation, the issues of human rights, security and stability.
