Absztrakt (kivonat)

South Korea is a unique country not only with architectures, high technology devices or its rapidly rising economy after the Korean war but also its culture, old customs, habits, cuisine and the way they combine past-present and West-East. Over the past few decades, the growing love of South Korean popular culture which is called Hallyu (the Korean wave) has spread throughout the world. The Korean wave has created an increased demand for popular culture products which range from Korean pop music, Korean television series, movies, fashion, tourism, video games, language, and food. In different parts of the world, the nation image of South Korea has still negative impacts of the Korean War, North Korea, and the extreme plastic surgery stories. Creating a positive image was a challenging and long process for the country until ‘’Hallyu’’ has emerged in the mid-90s. The Korean wave has cleaned all prejudices and bad image about South Korea and has strengthened its image and economy. Globalization has played an important role in this spread. The Korean government’s financial support, as well as successful policies in promoting the growth of the cultural industry, has been effective in driving the Korean Wave. A wealth of organizations and entertainment agencies are involved in cultural diplomacy and international exchange. Major organizations are Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (MCST) and Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA). Whilst MCST is responsible for culture, art, tourism, religion, and sports, MOFA makes use of the Korea Foundation and its network as its main agent to promote South Korea through culture, education and intellectual exchange. The close relations of South Korea and Turkey that began when Turkey sent troops to the Korean war, has been reinforced through Hallyu. Following the spread of the Korean wave, the Korean channel Arirang TV and Turkish Radio and Television Corporation (TRT) have made an agreement on broadcasting Korean television series in Turkey and in 2005, Turkish people first met Korean dramas and Korean culture. After this initiative, Turkey has become one of those countries that lost in the magic of Hallyu. The two countries which are locationally far away from each other but feel so close to heart, have started a more intense cultural exchange and diplomatic cooperations than before.
