Absztrakt (kivonat)

The continent of Africa is the only one that seems to have been left behind from the fruits of trade in the past couple of decades, as a result the continent is plagued with underdevelopment, now the question is what instruments can be used to move Africa along the same development path as other regions of the world. Trade is an instrument that has proved that it can improve the lives of people, and move them out of isolation. Now the aim of this research is to establish if whether trade could stimulate economic growth and development for South Africa and by extension Africa. Can the models used in other parts of the world be replicated in South Africa and SADC to ensure that intra trade amongst the African countries can improve from the current levels. I shall explore the potential that trade has on growth, examine some of the obstacles that hinder improved intra trade on the African continent. Evaluate the impact of the Chinese One Belt One Road initiative on African intra trade, furthermore investigate some of the strategies that can be used to drive intra trade such as internationalisation of local companies. Evaluate the effect of geography on international trade, how does it influence level and degree of participation in global trade. Then finally examine the mechanisms of the two regional bodies in terms of trade, the Southern African Customs Union and the European Union, with emphasis on Germany as a model for South Africa. The research has found that the global trade market is saturated and does not offer much opportunities for new emerging players albeit only as recipient of production activities that are low value adding. The real opportunities lie in Africa, and it’s for African countries to take up these opportunities and unlock the growth potential, the raw materials are in abundance, the continent has to add far more value on to these products so that they can unlock growth inherent in them. There are challenges but with resilience and willpower they can be overcome.
