Abaházy Anna Konzulens: 4. aktív félév Dr. Gáspár Tamás Nemzetközi gazdaság és gazdálkodás Msc angol nyelven tudományos főmunkatárs BGE KKK BGE KKK   Income -and labour cost differences between Austria, Hungary and Slovakia Examining the huge gap among smaller Western and Eastern European countries Income level differences and inequality exist all around the world, creating huge challenges to national economies in order to keep up their development. Living conditions and the standard of living are quite diverse in each country due to the inequality of incomes.  In this paper my analysis covers three member countries of the European Union: Austria, Hungary and Slovakia. The ground of examination is to determine the income and labour cost differences among these three countries, representing the inequality between Eastern-Western European smaller countries. In this research my first objective is to analyze and compare mean gross and net annual per capita income of the choosen countries. Furthermore, another crucial part of the paper is the analyis of the differences in the labour costs per employees. I also consider the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic that broke out in 2020. Moreover, I would like to come up with possible solutions to why is Austria so attractive to the labour force of Hungary and Slovakia, what encourages them to leave their country and work in Austria. Based on my knowledge and interest about the topic, I formulated three research questions which also determine the structure of the paper. After providing the basic information on the topic (main concepts, population, number of employees) I give an answer to the first question: How much income and labour cost differences can be indentified between Austria-Hungary and Slovakia? Firstly, I compare the countries’s gross and net mean annual income of a single person earning 100% of the average, then the study continues with the measurement of the differences in the average number of weekly working hours, and in the average hourly labour costs per employees. Finally, I investigate the income-effect of COVID-19 pandemic and explain the aims and methods of governmental job retention programs. The research is made with descriptive analysis of secondary data, pre-collected by International Labour Organization and Eurostat. The illustrations (graphs) are self-made, based on interpretation of the collected data.   The results prove that there is a significant disparity between the income and labour costs of Austria and the other two countries. The research also detects that Austrian employees work less for their much higher salaries, in case of average weekly working hours. On the other hand, the COVID-19 pandemic had a larger effect on the working hours and income of Austrian employees, as well as on the number of employees that were temporarily laid off due to the economic crisis caused by the virus. Consequently, COVID-19 will not broaden the already existing wide gap between Austria, Slovakia and Hungary.
