Summary The thesis had the aim to test the hypothesis that the domestic gas industry in Hungary will play a vital role regarding sustainable development. The research collected relevant scientific literature and legal aspects, reviewed the leading energy provider companies current state in the matter, conducted interviews with their executives who are responsible for sustainability in the business. It also showcased the studies of a workshop held at the premises of one such company, where the main focus was sustainability, to get a comprehensive view of what tasks are ahead of them that will somehow need to be financed. The findings have proved that the Hungarian gas industry will play an essential role in the decarbonisation process, taking the European Green Deal as the primary goal. Every sector in the economy is being highly affected by the initiatives of sustainability, and enormous changes are required regarding to the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations. Being sustainable is becoming more and more prestigious in the recent years, therefore appearing as a reputational risk for businesses. The study aimed to gather information regarding the gas sector and its role in the upcoming transition to green energy. To be more specific, the research examined the challenges of the gas industry and the obstacles slowing down their decision-making process. There are several ambitious plans, but the one that currently seems to be the most viable is actually the hydrogen technology. The thesis reviewed the technology from several aspects, confirming that the implementation of the usage of hydrogen into the gas industry is an excellent option for transitioning to renewable energy sources for the consumers of Hungary. However, the amounts required by these investments, paired with the long-term returns that are predicted for them, are pretty problematic. If they get aid from the governments, only then will they be motivated enough for making the transition of their business profile. The current state of market segregation, meaning the gas sector's exclusion from hydrogen production after 2030, is also slowing down the reaction. We will have to follow the future of the regulations concerning these slowing effects on business owners.
