This paper examines the Mother Road of the USA, or more commonly, Route 66, the most famous highway in the United States in the context of heritage. This road has had many different roles in its life; which all used to cluster into transportation. Soon after it was decommissioned and was no longer a federal highway, transportation became a secondary function, and its cultural values were in focus. Now, the highway is living its revitalizing era, with growing importance on preservation and restoration for the future. However, it has been encountering challenges because of lack of awareness, knowledge and understanding of Route 66 among people – including those who live on this historic highway. This is crucial in order to activate the heritage cycle defined by Simon Thurley (2005), where understanding, valuing, caring and enjoying circulate continuously through generations to sustaining cultural heritage – thus the author sets the people as the solution to the challenges and examines their position regarding Route 66 as a heritage asset. While heritage brings people together to share a common interest, it also brings tourism for the route, for its communities and their economies, if recognized. The author of this paper by launching a questionnaire found that people find it important to engage in heritage activities on Route 66. They know a lot about its historical significance, in addition they follow the news on it, in contrast with the wider public; people lack awareness, knowledge and understanding of Route 66. The findings of the interview with a Route 66 business owner confirmed the same problem: people are not aware of this important road, and do not recognize what an economic upturn it could bring to Route 66 communities. Based on the findings, the author set the aim to find solutions on how to raise awareness primarily in locally, nationally and internationally, and what can be done in order to popularize this legendary road among tourists, and young supporters who will be the future of Route 66.
